Hagop and Alice Bezjian immigrated to Los Angeles from Beirut Lebanon in 1964 and opened the first Armenian grocery store in Hollywood, California in 1966. The grocery store catered to Armenian, Middle Eastern and Indian ethnic groups, and was the only store carrying foods for these groups at that time. Over the years, the store grew, as did the different ethnic groups shopping at the store. In fact, the store became a tourist stop for tour buses to visit and sample foods from all over the world. As the demand for their products grew, their second son Albert left his engineering job, and joined the company adding a wholesale division under the name of Indo~European Foods. The name was selected because Indo-European is a group of languages, and the language spoken by most of the customers of the store was from the Indo-European group of languages. By 1980, Indo-European was one of the first companies that imported large quantities of Indian Basmati rice and distributed it through Iranian, Indian and Middle-Eastern grocery stores. In 1989, the wholesale company moved from its original location in Hollywood, Ca to a larger facility in Glendale, Ca. The new facility enabled Indo~European Foods to expand its extensive product line for the ethnic community. In 1995, Indo-European worked with a Bulgarian small producer to pack products for the Eastern European community. The ZerGut brand was created, and the producer in Bulgaria has since become the largest packer and exporter of fruits and vegetables from Bulgaria. The Bulgarian facility has expanded several times and has been approved as an exporter by major U.S. clients. In 2007, a private investment group purchased from Albert Bezjian a majority interest in the company. Albert Bezjian continues as an active member of the board of directors and continues to provide his leadership to various areas of the company. |
